Hamilton has won five titles with Mercedes, clinching his sixth championship at the US Grand Prix in Austin.

Lewis Hamilton will use the remaining weekends to experiment for next season. It marks the first grand prix Wolff has missed since he joined the all-conquering Silver Arrows in 2013.

There could also be change at the helm of Formula One post-2020 and Austrian Wolff has been talked of as someone who could play such a role.

"It's nearly a different approach now for me, because we can be a little bit more aggressive", the Briton told reporters.

"I don't know what that is for him (Wolff), only he will know", added the Briton, who said Wolf has been "the ideal match" for him and Mercedes.

But one thing I'm certain of is that one day, if he decides to stop his career, people will acknowledge his successes and what a great superstar he was".

"I think he has such a presence in this team that even whilst he's not here, he's still here", the 34-year-old said. And I'm sure, once you have put something in place, you think damn it, I could have done this, this could have been better - and you have to apply this to the next one. "I need a bit more consistency, fewer mistakes".
