As we expected, Microsoft took to the stage during the annual XO19 event this year and revealed official gameplay for Age of Empires IV.

As a final aside, the two factions in the gameplay were the Mongols and the English.

And yes, the uber-powerful trebuchet ranged units will be making a return - watch how their missiles cause a castle fortification to crumble.

Relic Entertainment and Xbox Game Studios first announced Age of Empires IV all the way back in 2017. But needless to say, we can't wait to strap on a suit of armour and start barking orders at our pikemen. While the previous Age of Empire games were had a bird's eye view perspective, this footage showcases a point-of-view that's more like something a general would have rather than an omnipotent deity watching from above. But, in the meantime Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition got a huge update 4K today - and it looks great. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is already available via Xbox Game Pass for PC, Windows 10 or Steam.

We were finally given a look at Age of Empires 4 today during X019.

It's a heady time for Age of Empires fans. Part of me still half-expects them to announce Age Of Empires 4 is actually an idle game for Facebook. Make it happen, Microsoft.
