Tyson Hesse was the lead artist on Sonic's redesign

Fans were outraged after the initial trailer for the movie dropped in April, because Sonic looked too different from the classic character everyone knows and loves.

Sonic the Hedgehog celebrates his 30th anniversary in 2021, so you can probably expect SEGA to mark the occasion with a brand new game. His face looks closer to that of the Sonic we've seen in the games.

Following fan outcry, director Jeff Fowler announced changes would be made to the character.

Yesterday, Paramount pulled back the veil on the new-look Sonic the Hedgehog after the first design went over as well as a lead balloon.

It follows Edgar as he accidentally melts the ice-rink, reduces a snowman to a puddle and sets fire to a Christmas tree. John Lewis " much anticipated Christmas advert has introduced the world to "Excitable Edgar'.

There are still some cinematic tweaks, of course. His fur is brighter, as are his eyes. But the gloves are back, the teeth aren't as humanoid, and the nose is the cute little nubbin it should be. Many have also appointed out the many tiny details inserted by Hesse and others working on the movie, including references to in-game animations. But the new version of Sonic introduced by Conan O'Brien may have fans running in the opposite direction. He makes his secret home on Earth, where as soon as he's discovered... everyone apparently keeps trying to steal his powers.

With the new trailer, we get to see more of Jim Carrey as the evil Dr. Robotnik. Sonic, they said, looked drastically different from the lovable hedgehog they had grown up playing. Check out the new trailer below, followed by the official synopsis and a side-by-side with the original trailer so you can appreciate just how epic the upgrade is. Sonic the Hedgehog will be in cinemas around the world on 14th February 2020. Additionally, Hesse has contributed as an artist on the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series.
