Trump impeachment inquiry moves ahead after start of televised hearings

Pelosi said, "It's perfectly wrong".

"That he is not above the law", Ms Pelosi said. The money, approved by the U.S. Congress to help a U.S. ally combat Russia-backed separatists in the eastern part of the country, was later provided to Ukraine.

Trump has said multiple times he will not work with Congress while the Democratic-controlled lower chamber investigates him, despite multiple issues that would need Congress' approval including a trade deal with China and legislation to lower drug pricing.

Wednesday's hearing, held in an ornate hearing room packed with journalists, lawmakers and members of the public, was the first step in a new public phase of the impeachment inquiry as Democrats and Republicans each try to make their case to the public. At a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump dismissed the inquiry into his conduct as a "sham" and a "joke" and said it "shouldn't be allowed".

That would lead to a trial in the Senate on whether to convict Mr Trump of those charges and remove him from office. Republicans control the Senate and have shown little support for Trump's removal.

The Constitution includes "treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors" as impeachable offenses.

And I would say, 'I've got lawyers and staff people handling this impeachment inquiry, and they should just have at it.' Meanwhile, I'm going to work for the American people.

"Quid pro quo: Bribery", Pelosi said about Trump's July 25 phone call in which he asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a favour. It revolves around Trump asking the Ukraine president for a "favor". Pelosi said Trump's actions to enlist a foreign power to help him in a United States election and the obstruction of information about that - she called it a cover-up - "makes what Nixon did look nearly small".

The screen offers a resolution of 2142 x 876 pixels and is made of plastic, as is the case with many other foldable smartphones. He says that layer will help prevent particles like sand from going into the device's electronics and breaking the display.

Late September, the impeachment inquiry, which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi initiated over a complaint by an anonymous whistleblower, is looking into White House's alleged efforts to withhold military aid to have Ukraine investigate a Trump's political rival, Joe Biden.

Taylor, the acting ambassador to Ukraine, offered an account that linked the Republican president more directly to the pressure campaign on Ukraine.

The president, who said he was too busy to watch the initial hearing as it was televised, caught up in the White House residence Wednesday evening and tweeted along with a Fox News morning recap Thursday.

The Intelligence Committee is due to hear on Friday from Yovanovitch, whom Trump abruptly removed from her post as ambassador to Ukraine in May. Later it was revealed that the administration was withholding military aid from Ukraine at the time.

Yovanovitch, who has worked for both Republican and Democratic administrations, told lawmakers behind closed doors on October 11 that Trump ousted her based on "unfounded and false claims by people with clearly questionable motives" after she came under attack by Giuliani.

Tuesday: Jennifer Williams, an aide to Vice President Mike Pence; Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, former director for European affairs at the National Security Council; Ambassador Kurt Volker, former USA special envoy to Ukraine; and Tim Morrison, a White House aide with the National Security Council focusing on Europe and Russian Federation policy. She also told lawmakers that U.S. Ambassador to the E.U. Gordon Sondland had recommended she praise Trump on Twitter if she wanted to save her job.

Asked by the intelligence committee's Democratic chairman Adam Schiff if that meant Mr Trump cared more about the investigations than about Ukraine, Mr Taylor said: "Yes, sir".

During the first day of testimony, Taylor and another seasoned foreign service officer, George Kent, the deputy assistant secretary of State, delivered sombre accounts about recent months. "He knows that it isn't enough to end this IMPEACHMENT SCAM".
