Neighbors, classmates describe school shooting suspect as a ‘quiet kid’

Authorities said all of the victims and the suspect are students at the school.

Shauna Orandi, 16, was in her Spanish class when she heard four gunshots and a student burst into the room saying he'd seen the shooter. The victims "appeared to be who was around him, available at the time".

Saugus High School in Santa Clarita was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after authorities responded to reports of a shooting.

Police have not publicly identified the suspect because he's a minor. A search warrant was being obtained for his home. Santa Clarita is a city of more than 200,000 about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

McCracken also mentioned briefly that the alleged shooter's father had died not too long ago. In 2015, the father had been arrested amid a domestic dispute with the boy's mother but no charges were filed. The suspect was captured by 9:43 a.m. and is being treated at a local hospital.

"You can't outrun a gun", she said. You don't expect that type of thing.

Those in the building barricaded themselves in classrooms trying not to make a sound until they were finally ordered to exit the rooms by police officers with guns drawn.

The girls "held their composure despite being shot", said Dr. Boris Borazjani, a trauma surgeon at Providence Holy Cross Hospital.

Around 2,300 students attend Saugus High School, which consists of more than a dozen buildings. It mainly featured goofy clips, some with people crashing bicycles or failing to land stunts. Last year, they were paired on engineering projects and sometimes he came to her house.

Student Alexa Funk, 15, recalled hearing the first shot, and the second, but did not get scared until the third bullet was sacked. The closest she could get was a keychain he had with a hollow bullet.

Results posted online from school track meets last spring show he was an unexceptional middle- and long-distance runner. His GPA landed him on the honor roll in the fall of eighth grade, according to online school records.

He seemed like "one of those normal kids", according to a student in his physics class.

"I just heard a lot of kids crying".

Police have not released the name of the suspect, but have said it was his 16th birthday on Thursday.

According to USA Today, so far in 2019 at least 30 shooting attacks have taken place on school grounds in the United States that have resulted in deaths and injuries.
