India smartphone market ships record 46.6 mn units in Q3 2019

Xiaomi continues its dominance of the Indian market with an estimated shipment of 12.6 million units, representing an 8.5% yearly growth.

Apple registered a new record in India in its fiscal Q4 quarter and the company generated an all-time revenue record for the Mac desktops in the country.

"The lag between the older Galaxy A series (Galaxy A10, A50 etc.) and the refreshed Galaxy A series (A10s, A50s etc.) just before the Diwali quarter led to this sharp decline". A fairly large chunk of all the smartphones shipped to India over the previous year was actually part of the Galaxy M series, as the company reportedly pushed more than 2 million Galaxy M10, M20, and M30 to the market in just a few months of availability.

Xiaomi was on top in India's smartphone market with 12.6 million shipments well ahead of Samsung, vivo and realme. IDC notes, however, that the numbers suffered from a lagging release schedule, and indeed the companys market share had hit 25 percent the previous quarter.

"The offline channel continued to face challenges".

According to IDC, Samsung was the only vendor amongst the top five to fall, dropping 8.5 per cent YoY in 3Q19. According to IDC India, Redmi 7A and Redmi Note 7 Pro were the most shipped phones while the company attracted consumers with its Redmi K20 series which starts upwards of Rs 20,000.

India's smartphone market hit a new record shipping 46.6 million phones during the third quarter of 2019 - the highest in a single quarter so far.

The Indian smartphone market remains a mainly low priced one, with the low price segment of Dollars 200 accounting for 80 percent of the phones sold in the market - the average selling price of a phone in the market is USD 159. Vivo shipped an estimated 7.1 million smartphone with a hugely impressive 58.7% yearly growth.

India's smartphone market is growing, yet Samsung's share of the market is in decline.

The fastest growing segment in the quarter was US$300-500 with double the shipments on-year as key models like the OnePlus 7, Redmi K20 Pro and vivo V15 Pro had good traction. Even as the offline channel players tried to match their offers in line with the online players, they fell short of the attractive deals that a consumer could grab in the online space and were still dealing with leftover inventory from previous quarters, the report said. However, newly launched Galaxy M30s registered strong shipments in its opening quarter. Moreover, OPPO became the second largest vendor in the fast-growing US300-500 segment on the back of its newly launched Reno 2 series.

Realme shipped a huge 7.1 million units in Q3 2019, up from 1.3 million in the same period past year.

Samsung remained the second biggest smartphone vendor with 18.9% market share, but its overall shipments have declined 8.5% from a year ago. This rise in shipment is due to the company's budget C2 model, Realme 3i, and Realme 5 series.
