Temperatures may fall to -2C this week

Britain is getting snow this week and Met Éireann is forecasting that wintry weather is on the way for Ireland.

The is expecting a cold week with hail and sleet as well as freezing nights.

"The rain and sleet will clear southwards overnight with clear periods following and with frost and icy patches developing. Temperatures are quite low and are below normal, ranging from -1 and -3 degrees", added Ms Walsh.

Cold today with sunshine & showers, some heavy with a risk of hail & thunder.

From Thursday to Saturday, there will be wintry showers in the north over hills. Conditions are expected to be brighter in the south and west though with sunny spells and scattered showers of rain or hail.

Temperatures will reach as high as 7C but it will feel very chilly with fresh and westerly breezes.

Heavy rain wreaked havoc last week, causing devastating floods in the north of England. The best of the dry and sunny intervals will be in the south and east. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.

Monday night will see temps drop to a low of 2C but it will remain a cold and dry night with just the odd isolated shower.

A frosty start in places but a brighter day. On Saturday night, rain and sleet will continue, but gradually clearing southeastwards overnight and early on Sunday. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees with moderate northerly breezes. Highest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees.

After a cold Tuesday night, with sharp ground frost, Wednesday will see the worst of this wintry weather. This rain will spread slowly eastwards.

The cold weather looks set to continue on Friday with light winds with more frost predicted.
