President Trump recognizes ‘America’s greatest living heroes’ on Veterans Day

A sign in favor of impeachment is displayed in the windows of an office building near Madison Square Park before President Trump's speech to kick off New York City's 100th annual Veterans Day parade November 11, 2019. WXXI's Randy Gorbman has more.

He noted the presence of veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and the war on terror. While presidents have always been invited, McGowan said that, as far as he knows, Trump is the first to accept.

Trump, who did not serve in the U.S. military himself, has a history of denigrating some veterans, including his frequent criticism of the late Sen.

"It's so hard to describe, I'm still floating on cloud nine, to have the president of the United States talk directly to you and tell of your experiences and that, it's just so outside of our regular realm of things", Foy told WXXI News.

The parade, which was celebrating its 100th year running, featured 300 marching elements and included veterans from different eras and wars.

"They volunteered to sacrifice so much for this country", Monzon, who hails from New Jersey, said.

A NY judge ruled last week that Trump must pay $2 million in damages to settle claims the Trump Foundation diverted over $2.8 million earned from a televised fundraiser from a veterans charity to his campaign, which is against the law.

The Impeachment Inquiry Public Hearings: What To Expect
Bolton, meanwhile, had been summoned to talk with impeachment investigators but declined and isn't expected to comply. He has urged the public to read the transcript of that call that was released by the White House in September .

Though he spent part of his morning railing on Twitter against House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff in the days before public hearings in the House impeachment inquiry begin, Trump's remarks were focused on veterans and USA history, with a reference to the recent killing of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Monson said parade attendees approached him on several occasions, thanking him for his service to the country. "It's a good thing that he did that", he said.

Under the Trump Administration, veteran unemployment reached the lowest level ever recorded.

The directive benefits tens of thousands of struggling veterans, as only half of the roughly 50,000 now qualified to have their federal loans discharged have received the benefit.

People carry a giant American flag up Fifth Avenue during the New York City Veterans Day Parade in New York, Monday, Nov. 11, 2019.

The parade will be live-streamed on Military.com and the official Veterans Day Parade website. "It should not be turned into a spectacle", he said last week. "We will ensure that the righteous legacy of America's veterans stands as a testament to this station from now until the end of time".

"We should all honor those who served and those who never came back", he said.
