Five takeaways from Cowboys' loss to Vikings: Dak Prescott deserved better

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones when asked if he questioned the two Ezekiel Elliott runs on decisive drive: "I'm not going get into that sensitive work".

Dallas is now 5-3 and holds a slim half-game lead (one in the loss column) over the Philadelphia Eagles for first place in the NFC East.

The Cowboys might need a new rallying cry as it prepares for the Lions next week. Getting back into the game was great and all and the Cowboys had a chance at the end, but the way they called plays after the two-minute warning killed the Cowboys' momentum. It's what got Dallas down to Minnesota's 11-yard line with 1:33 remaining, down by four.

Common logic screamed for the Cowboys to ride the arm of Prescott, who had his way with the league's 18th-ranked secondary, logging 397 yards, three touchdowns and a Hail Mary interception on 28-of-46 passing, good for a 101.5 rating. But he was consumed by how he failed Dallas on that penultimate possession, taking responsibility for not hitting Zeke on the fourth-down out route and completing a late comeback. They took the ball out of their best player's hands on that third down and went back to their old, clock controlling ways.

Jason Garrett and the coaching staff got too cute in a game that they couldn't afford to lose. Starting at his own 6-yard line with 4:34 left in the game, Prescott completed 6-of-7 passes for 79 yards that set Dallas up with a second-and-2 at the Minnesota 11-yard line. But the result remains the same.

Jones told reporters after the game that the loss would be costly, and he said he hopes it doesn't turn out to be "terminal".
