Chicago braces for first winter blast, possibly record-breaking cold

The National Weather Service said with the rapidly falling temperatures, the best chance for snow will occur across the Bay State's higher terrain, across the western sides of the Berkshires and the Worcester Hills.

An Arctic blast is moving into Middle Tennessee Monday night - bringing rain, bitterly cold temperatures and snow. Wind chills Wednesday morning will be in the single digits!

"The worst weather can be expected after sunset Monday through about sunrise Tuesday", according to Drew Montreuil of Finger Lakes Weather.

Snow has already begun to fall in parts of Michiana this morning. Some areas could see up to 1 foot of snow. Moderate to heavy bands of snow are likely as this system pushes through.

"The truly frigid air will spill in overnight", when a 24-degree low is expected in Raleigh, forecasters warn. But don't be surprised if you see a light coating of snow on some patches of grass or other cold surfaces.

Northeast Ohio is anticipating its first snow of the season, but don't expect "Snow-mageddon".

"148 daily record lows are now forecast to be broken, tied, or come within 1 degree between Tuesday and Thursday this week", the NWS Weather Prediction Center (NWS WPC) said in a post on its official Twitter account. The next five to seven days won't just be cold - they'll be record-breaking.

The bigger story is again the cold air that follows.

Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Lake and Geauga counties are all under a winter storm warning until Wednesday morning.

Lows drop into the upper teens tonight.

By Tuesday, highs may only reach the 30s as far south as Tupelo, Mississippi, Huntsville, Alabama, and Chattanoga, Tennessee.
