But the revelation by the President's son comes as the White House seeks to discredit the mounting impeachment effort in Congress against Mr Trump, painting it as driven by politics.

Trump railed against the "deranged, delusional, destructive" impeachment drive by House Democrats, warning that they are becoming "increasingly totalitarian" by "suppressing dissent, defaming the innocent, eliminating due process, staging show trials and trying to overthrow American democracy to impose their socialist agenda". "I'm going to help no matter what", he said.

The president mocked the so-called "whistleblower", noting that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff suddenly dropped any plans to have him testify.

Trump told the Lexington crowd on Monday that losing the governor's race would send "a really bad message", but he quickly pointed out on Twitter Tuesday night that every other Republican candidate seeking statewide office in Kentucky won their race.

In testimony released on Tuesday, close Trump ally Gordon Sondland, the United States ambassador to the European Union, admitted he had told a senior Ukraine official that the aid would not be released until Mr Zelensky fulfilled Mr Trump's demands. The AP and CNN reported that Brechbuhl was traveling to Germany on Wednesday with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Representatives for the State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"You will have a depression the likes of which you've never seen before", he said.

On Tuesday, transcripts from appearances by Sondland, who initially testified in October, and Kurt Volker, Trump's former special representative for Ukraine negotiations, revealed US diplomats pressed Ukrainian officials to meet Trump's demands.

Transcripts released on Monday showed two other USA diplomats told lawmakers the State Department under Trump was being used for domestic political purposes and warned such action would hurt American interests.

Democrats have accused Mr Trump of abuse of power and illegally leveraging U.S. military aid for political favours from a foreign country- a quid pro quo that Mr Trump denies.
