Schedule strength boosts Penn State to No. 4 in CFP rankings

Ohio State topped the playoff rankings, followed by LSU, Alabama and Penn State.

The Big Ten has six teams ranked in this week's edition of the CFP rankings, including two teams that are in the top four and, if the season ended now, would be in the four-team playoff.

Clemson (9-0) can still play the defending national champion-on-a-24-game-win streak card.

"We had a lengthy discussion about Penn State and Clemson, two really, really good teams, both strong defensively".

"When you look at Penn State's résumé, with wins over (No. 15) MI and (No. 18) Iowa, those are marquee wins", said committee chairman Rob Mullens, who is also Oregon's athletic director. "What matters is where we're at once we're done with the regular season".

Like anybody else I need what's finest for my youngsters and I wish to be completely happy. Biggest piece of s*** I've ever seen'. And a lot of it hasn't been pretty.

But the Tigers have been performing at a record-breaking pace as of late. The Cyclones came into the season ranked and were considered maybe the third-best team in the Big 12. "Penn State's strength of schedule gave it an edge over an impressive Clemson, which is ranked No. 5". It appears the Crimson Tide received the nod because their closest game is a 19-point victory. In the end, it won't matter if the Tigers go undefeated, then they're guaranteed a playoff berth.

Clemson fans weren't particularly happy with the outcome, after Penn State took the No. 4 spot. Clemson is at NC State, home vs Wake Forest and at SC in its final three regular season games before the conference championship game.

That said, the first five years of the College Football Playoff can at least provide a bit of a road map as to where the 2019 model of the CFP may be headed.

Other teams expected to be among the top four are Alabama, Clemson and LSU. Ohio State and Penn State are ranked one and four and will meet on November 23. They're on pace to win out and play each other in the conference championship game. We generally knew this, but that's especially true with them opening in the No. 5 spot.

The College Football Playoff selection committee has a great deal of respect for what Kansas State has accomplished under new coach Chris Klieman.
