Police say small portion of London theatre ceiling collapses

Pictures shared online showed a large hole in the ceiling with wires hanging down.

Emergency services were called just before 8pm and police said a few people suffered "minor injuries", but everyone had exited the theatre. The theatre had been completely evacuated, it was stated in the police notice.

On the game plan of the theatre, the Drama "death of a salesman" (Death of a Salesman) by Arthur Miller, is now according to their web site.

The play stars American actor Wendell Pierce.

Outside the 91-year-old theatre, the Pierce apologised to the audience and asked them to come back to see the production.

He says: 'I did now not mean for it to head like this.

"We're so honoured that you came tonight".

On Twitter members of the audience said they were "gutted" to be evacuated.

'Because the minutes passed, the dripping became extra frequent and it sounded like extra water became once coming thru the ceiling, causing a pair of folk to procure up and circulate.

"The sound eventually got so loud that we stood up and started to leave, as we were wondering what was going to happen".

'Then, as we stood up, this broad chunk of ceiling, about three to four metres across, crashed down.

One theatre-goer said there was "dripping" from the ceiling before it caved in, while another described people running and screaming to get out of the venue.

She tweeted: "Roof collapsed in Piccadilly Theatre tonight during performance of Death of a Salesman". A few screams. Everyone evacuated.

'Everyone is out of the theatre. A few minor injuries. The Metropolitan police have closed the roads to the surrounding area and advised motorists to use alternative routes.

A video shared on social media shows the U.S. actor outside the theatre asking the crowd to come back and see the play another time.
