KPL fixing scandal: Former Karnataka Ranji players Gautam, Qazi arrested

Former Karnataka Ranji Trophy cricketers CM Gautam and Abrar Kazi have been arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) for their alleged role in spot-fixing during this year's KPL final in Mysuru.

CM Gautam and Abrar Kazi arrested for spot-fixing: The two cricketers from Bellary Tuskers have come under the scanner.

Police said the two were involved in fixing in the KPL 2019 finals between Bellary Tuskers and Hubli Tigers after accepting Rs 20 lakh each for slow batting. They were paid 20 lakhs for slow batting, and for other things.

Earlier this week, the police had nabbed Bengaluru Blasters player Nishant Singh Shekhawat, was arrested. Bhavesh Bafna, a drummer who plays during Royal Challengers Bangalore's IPL fixtures, was also taken into custody for his involvement in fixing. Police also arrested another player yesterday. Also, they fixed another match against the Bengaluru team.

A total of seven people, including four players, have been arrested till now in the KPL spot-fixing case.

Apart from playing for RCB, Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Gautam has been a known face in Karnataka.

Each Gautham and Kazi had been named of their respective state squads for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match, scheduled to start on Friday.

Chasing 153 runs, Tuskers ended up with 144, with opener Gautam scoring a 37-ball 29 while Kazi struck 13 off six deliveries.

Kazi, on the other hand, had played for the Karnataka state team before transferring to another state.

On October 26, Bengaluru Blasters bowling coach Vinu Prasad and batsman Vishwanathan had been arrested in reference to the fixing scandal. More arrests are expected, the CCB said. Gautam was a long-term deputy of Vinay Kumar, and stood in for him in three matches 2013, captaining a team with the likes of Robin Uthappa, KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, and Manish Pandey.

Kazi, a bowling allrounder who also played under Gautam at some point, had a more stop-start career with Karnataka before moving onto Nagaland a year ago and making three 150+ scores as a middle-order batsman.
