Granit Xhaka 'no longer' Arsenal captain, confirms Unai Emery

Granit Xhaka was this week stripped of the Arsenal captaincy following the incident in the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last month.

"He accepted my decision".

Emery could have avoided a lot of this if he had picked a captain himself and it's something he could have done without right now because like Xhaka, the Arsenal manager isn't exactly Mr.

The 27-year-old Xhaka has been left out of the squad for this afternoon's game and Emery said: 'I had a meeting with him and told him he is no longer in the captain's group.

"We need to carry on and focus for tomorrow's match and next Saturday's match".

Should that decision be made, a number of candidates would likely become immediate favourites to take over, including Patrick Vieira.

The Gunners have used a combination of senior and young players in each match, but have left out top scorer Aubameyang and World Cup victor Ozil, who has only been selected four times in 2019-20.

Xhaka taunted home fans and removed his shirt when storming off the pitch after he was substituted and appeared to swear at his team's own supporters, as well as waving his arms taunting supporters to jeer louder and cupping his ear.

The midfielder has not played for Arsenal since and was left out of the traveling squad for Wednesday's game.

Xhaka was originally voted in as skipper by Arsenal's players.

In a post on his Instagram account, Xhaka wrote: "The scenes that took place around my substitution have moved me deeply. We want time, he's one in all our gamers and we desire to admire and offer protection to him and also continue in our method".

In a press release final week, Xhaka acknowledged he has been "deeply" hurt by abusive comments from supporters at fits and on social media, which included messages wishing most cancers upon his young daughter. "He's one of us so we're just helping him get through it".
