Florida State Buys Out Willie Taggart After Losing Games and Recruits

The University's athletic director David Coburn described the situation, saying, "There's a lot of ways to measure what was happening with the team". After a disappointing season, Taggart proceeded to make some adjustments to his offensive staff.

Taggart later addressed the public via Twitter stating that although he does not agree with the decision, he wishes the best for his now-former team.

FSU will have to pay Coach Willie Taggart an $18 million buyout to dismiss him from his contract, but university leaders say it will pay off in the long run.

Haggins is tasked with helping right the course as Florida State looks for two more wins to become bowl-eligible.

"Obviously, I am disappointed in the decision today as I believe our future is bright at Florida State", Taggart said. He has been even better since a three-year season as an Alabama offensive coordinator, who participated in the work of Florida Atlantic. "Clemson was a disappointment and I just felt and the president felt since then we just have not looked very good".

"I'd like to have a coach in place ready to go when the season ends, if not before", Coburn said when asked for a timeline on the decision. He wants to start searching for the next head coach as soon as possible. Maybe he does it and he denies it for the moment, because nothing indicates that the state of Florida is interested. I'm going to look at every option I can find.

"We are Florida State University", Haggins, who played for and later coached under the legendary Bobby Bowden, said.

While unofficial campaigning has been ramping up for weeks, the campaign formally began when Parliament was dissolved Wednesday. All 650 seats in the House of Commons are up for grabs in the December 12 election , which is coming more than two years early.

Coburn said Taggart's $17 million buyout hasn't been finalized.

Going into last weekend, the Seminoles had the No. 13-ranked recruiting class, which was up from the 22nd-ranked class in 2019, but a few commitments have already jumped ship.

Derek Bermudez was the first to de-commit last Sunday.

Four-star Georgia recruit Isaiah Dunson de-committed Monday and ESPN 300 running back Jaylan Knighton followed suit just hours later. Haggins has experience in this regard, having served as interim head coach when Jimbo Fisher left with one game left in the 2017 regular season.

This is also familiar territory for Haggins: He went 2-0 as Florida State's interim head coach after Fisher left to take the Texas A&M job in 2017.

The Seminoles appeared to be a transformed team under Haggins, and that is the hope now that he takes over with three games to play.

"The kids will see that, so therefore I'm going to be myself and make sure I let them know it's all about them and the university".
