Ancelotti at risk after Napoli players desert training camp

Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti during the match against Arsenal at Stadio San Paolo in Naples April 18, 2019.

Instead, after the 1-1 draw with Salzburg that left the Serie A side second in Group E behind Liverpool, the squad elected en masse to return to their homes.

Napoli are set to face Genoa on Saturday in the club's final match before the worldwide break before facing AC Milan upon returning to Serie A play.

After a disappointing loss to Roma on Saturday afternoon the Partenopei were looking to bounce back with a win against Salzburg but the draw extended their winless run in all competitions to four games.

It did not specify whether it meant that the players would face fines or even legal action.

"With regard to the behaviour of the first-team squad on Tuesday night, the club announces that it will do everything in its power to protect its economic interests, assets, image rights and disciplinary interests", the statement read.

Former Real Madrid, Chelsea, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Paris St Germain coach Ancelotti refused to take part in a post-match news conference, heightening speculation of a rift between him and the club.

After the game Insigne backed his manager, saying: 'We're a close-knit group and that's down to the coach as he maintains calm and has tried to take the pressure off us in this hard spell. "We're grateful to him and all want to perform well for him".

'We must look forward and think positive.

"It is also made clear that the responsibility to decide on ordering days in a training retreat lies with coach Carlo Ancelotti".

But regardless of having the support of his players, Ancelotti is facing one of football's most controversial and outspoken owners in De Laurentiis and if reports from Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport are to be believed, this could soon turn into a race for who can pull the trigger first; resign or be sacked? "But, if you ask me if I agree, I would say no", Ancelotti said concerning the training camp on Monday.
