Shapovalov strikes gold in Stockholm for first ATP title

The fourth-seeded Shapovalov, of Richmond Hill, Ont., captured the Stockholm Open on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Serbian Filip Krajinovic.

The 20-year-old was lights out on his serve, firing 16 aces and winning 93% of his first-serve points.

No Canadian has won on the ATP Tour since Milos Raonic in Brisbane in January 2016.

Notably, he helped send Serbia to its first Davis Cup final in 2010, and named Viktor Troicki's Davis Cup win over Michael Llodra to seal the Davis Cup title that year as his best career moment.

Krajinovic, ranked No. 60, has never faced Shapovalov before.

"This tournament started the year my mom was born, so it has got a great history and it is wonderful to be the first Canadian to win it", said Shapovalov. I had a lot of deuce games on his serve and I wasn't able to convert.

"I think it's a big step to win my first title", he said.

After finally earning his first shot to play for a title, Shapovalov said he was not sure how he would feel on the court but was never overwhelmed by the stakes.

That patience and self-belief could go a long way in helping the 20-year-old Shapovalov, who for years has been considered a rising talent in Canadian tennis, unlock what some experts feel is an unlimited source of potential. "I've seen all the unbelievable names up on the board, so it will be nice to see my name up there as well".

"I've seen him play here and there", Shapovalov said. Tipsarevic saved nine match points against the Japanese but eventually lost 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (4) after thrilling three hours and nine minutes. "I knew I struggled a couple times in the semi-finals, I had some tough draws and tough matches but stayed pretty patient". Filip Krajinovic was also pursuing his first ATP Tour crown.
