As flu season kicks off, UH Student Health Center offers vaccinations

The flu report will be posted every Thursday throughout the flu season with updated data from around the state on flu activity and other viral respiratory illnesses.

"We are glad schools and parents continue to appreciate and find value in this program", said Department of Health Director Bruce Anderson.

About 31,500 students statewide will receive free flu shots from now until next month.

Doses of influenza vaccine began appearing at pharmacies, clinics and health-care providers this week.

"We do have evidence that flu vaccination reduces the risk of flu illness by between 40 percent and 60 percent among the overall population", said Nicole Robinson, UH Student Health Center nurse practitioner.

Some students said they'd feel more at ease about the spread of influenza if people got the flu vaccination to prepare. According to the CDC, the higher dose of antigen in the vaccine gives the elderly a better immune response.

Zion Williamson Out 6-To-8 Weeks Following Surgery
Zion Williamson has undergone surgery for a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee and will miss six to eight weeks. But that doesn't mean the Pelicans won't still be one of the most intriguing teams in the league.

"Generally flu season ranges from October to May, so it takes about two weeks for the flu shot to become effective once getting it".

Side effects of this season's cold virus incorporate fever, hack, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body hurts, cerebral pains and exhaustion, as per health authorities.

"The timing of the delivery of the flu vaccine, and the quantity of vaccine available can, and does, vary from year to year due to a variety of factors related to the manufacturing, testing, and regulatory processes". If you want to get the flu shot on a Friday, you will need to make an appointment.

Although it's possible to contract the flu after receiving the vaccine, the likelihood of it becoming deadly is minor. "The risk of a flu shot causing serious harm or death is extremely small".

Normal flu vaccination hours will resume Wednesday. Washing hands often, covering your cough and sneeze, refraining from touching public surfaces and avoiding those who are sick can all be useful methods, Robinson said.
