Armed man steals ambulance and 'drives into crowds' in Oslo

"They were called to an ordinary traffic accident where they were met by the armed person", Bayer said, adding that the hospital had quickly tracked the ambulance via its built-in Global Positioning System device.

The woman and the children as well as the couple were taken to hospital, Norwegian broadcaster, NRK reported.

"It was crying", she said, adding that a woman and the baby were driven to a hospital in police cars, as police didn't wait for ambulances to arrive.

"We have taken control of an ambulance that was stolen by an armed man", Oslo police said on Twitter.

Officers are hunting for a second suspect, a woman, over the theft of the ambulance, police tweeted Tuesday.

Photos from the scene showed that the perpetrator wore military green trousers, camouflage jacket and what looked like a bulletproof vest.

Police also said they were looking for a woman who "looks drunk" and may have been involved in the incident in north Oslo. Another photo in the daily showed a handcuffed man, flanked by police, walking toward an ambulance stretcher. Pursued by police, the ambulance then crashed into a gate outside a residential building.

"I heard several shots", Omar Khatujev told Aftenposten.

Police would not confirm if it was a deliberate attack, or if anyone had been killed.
