Trump says G7 summit won't be held at his Florida golf resort

President Donald Trump speaks during an event where he congratulated astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch as they conduct the first all-female spacewalk, from the Roosevelt Room of the White House, Oct. 18, 2019, in Washington.

Trump announced a rare backtrack on Saturday night after facing accusations that he was using the presidency to enrich himself by hosting the worldwide summit at a private resort owned by his family. "But, as usual, the Hostile Media & their Democrat Partners went insane!" he continued. He wrote that "the search for another site, including the possibility of Camp David", will begin immediately.

Wallace said, "No question you were following the president's orders, but your fingerprints are all over linking aide to Ukraine with investigating the Bidens".

Speaking on "Fox & Friends" on Sunday Huckabee said, "They [Democrats] went berserk over this".

The Trump National Doral clubhouse in Doral, Florida has been dropped as the venue for a G7 meeting following a backlash.

"He still considers himself to be in the hospitality business", said Mulvaney.

In a tweet, Trump stated that he will no longer be hosting the summit at his golf resort in 2020 amid the hostility that he is facing and will look for an alternative that will also include Camp David. 'I think it's the right decision to change and we'll have to find someplace else and my guess is we'll find someplace else the media won't like for another reason'.

"The Doral reversal and Ukraine scandal both revolve around the same issue: the president abusing his power for self-interest", said Julian Zelizer, a Princeton historian, on Twitter.

In comments quoted by The Washington Post, Florida Representative Francis Rooney said: "I think it's not a good thing to have the appearance - you know, in the law, there's a canon that says, "Avoid the appearance of impropriety".

Trump's acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney on Friday announced the decision to hold the G7 at Doral, while giving a press briefing with reporters.

According to Bookbinder, the "reversal shows that pressure works, that those fighting to hold the line for an ethical government can still sometimes dial down his corruption".

Critics said the plan was evidence of Mr Trump using the office for personal gain, which the White House denied. The position doesn't require Congressional approval, yet Trump has never elevated Mulvaney beyond an "acting" role. Nadler said the committee would continue investigating "regarding these matters".

The Republican president faces criticism and a number of congressional investigations over his finances and potential conflicts of interest stemming from his real estate business, which he still owns, and an impeachment inquiry into accusations that he pursued political interests in his dealings with Ukraine.

Those sorts of moves had spawned lawsuits arguing the payments were emoluments, violating the Constitution's prohibition on profiting from the presidency.
