Trump reverses plan to host G7 summit at his golf resort

Trump announced a rare backtrack Saturday night after facing accusations that he was using the presidency to enrich himself by hosting the global summit at the private resort owned by his family. I wondered at the time if the Trump Hotel Collection would be safe from a Trump presidency, but the thought of a Trump presidency seemed to me a remote possibility at best.

Mulvaney's comments saying just the opposite of what he is saying now undercut Trump's longstanding defense that aid to Ukraine was never conditioned on advancing a political agenda.

Mulvaney had said the south Florida venue was "the best place" among a dozen United States locations considered for the June 10 to 12 gathering next year. It was also an opportunity for Mulvaney demonstrate his ability to defend the president.

The issue is a central topic of the impeachment inquiry into Trump's interactions with the president of Ukraine.

"The look back to what happened in 2016 certainly was part of the thing that he was anxious about in corruption with that nation", Mulvaney told reporters.

I did then mention that in the past, the president had mentioned to me, from time to time, about the DNC server.

"We talked about it at great length last night".

Mulvaney, though, did acknowledge he could "absolutely" see how people took his words "the wrong way", but continued to emphasize he "never said it was a 'quid pro quo'".

"OK that's not what I said, that's what people said I said", Mulvaney said.

The border town of Kobani also stands between Turkish-controlled Syrian territories to the west and Kurdish-held eastern Syria. The Observatory said Saturday that Turkey-backed Syrian fighters have prevented a medical convoy from reaching Ras al-Ayn.

President Trump's reversal on hosting a major worldwide meeting at one of his own resorts was a rare retreat for the famously stubborn man, who was taken aback by a bipartisan barrage of criticism for a proposal that smacked of self-dealing.

Mulvaney is not aware of any effort to replace him, according to a person close to him who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal conversations. From the beginning, the assertion made by Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney that Doral was the best location in the country and that it was selected only after an "exhaustive" survey of alternative locations is absurd. After considering locations in California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee and Utah, Doral was selected, Mulvaney said.

The news conference on Thursday left aides in the West Wing dumbfounded at the former SC congressman's performance and some quarters of Trump's orbit - the Justice Department and Trump's personal attorney, among them - dissociating themselves from his account.

Some Republicans also condemned the surprise remarks.

In the coming week, the House panels will host at least five government officials who were in some way connected to the use and redirection of Ukraine military aid, including Michael Duffey, the official at the Office of Management and Budget who signed off on the apportionment letters that froze the money.

Mulvaney became Trump's third chief of staff after the departure in January of General John Kelly. He insisted his staff had concluded it used to be "far and away the good bodily facility".

"Questioned over whether the move was in violation of ethics rules, Mr Mulvaney added: "[President Trump would] be criticised regardless of what he chose to do.

Some Mulvaney boosters pinned blame for a flat-footed impeachment strategy on White House Counsel Pat Cipollone.
