Tokyo Motor Show: Toyota to Show Production-Ready Ultra-Compact BEV

At next week's Tokyo Motor Show Toyota will present a production-ready electric compact auto that will be launched in Japan at the end of 2020. But so far none of the concepts have gone into series production. "We are proud to offer customers a vehicle that not only allows for greater autonomy, but also requires less space, creates less noise and limits environmental impact", said head of development Akihiro Yanaka about the production-ready kei auto. More specifically, the two-seater EV is created to meet the daily mobility needs of customers who make regular, short-distance trips.

According to Toyota, two-seat electric auto has been specially designed for people who need to make short daily trips, such as the elderly, new drivers, or business people visiting local clients.

This adorable little box on wheels is more than just a concept to put on display at auto shows as Toyota says it's a production-ready electric vehicle scheduled to go on sale in Japan by the end of 2020.

It has a range of approximately 100 km on a single charge, reaches a maximum speed of 60km and features a tight turning radius.

In addition to sales to private individuals, Toyota also wants to investigate other applications for the two-seater - for example as a mobility service for municipalities that want to create "environmentally-friendly transportation options in urban or mountainous communities".

While TMC is yet to reveal the specifics of the Ultra-compact BEV's powertrain and battery, it has confirmed that it can travel about 100km between charges, while a full charge takes about five hours when using a 200V charger.

In the short-term, Toyota plans to introduce a new battery leasing scheme whereby used units can be swapped into pre-owned vehicles, broken down for spare parts or used in non-automotive power storage facilities as appropriate.

As its name suggests, the Ultra-compact BEV is diminutive in stature, measuring 2490mm long, 1290mm wide and 1550mm tall. 2 hours (replaceable battery) Approx.
