Tavares will miss at least two weeks with broken finger

Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares will be out at least two weeks with a broken finger. "And we obviously played a lot better tonight".

"I was just getting lucky", Carlson told reporters.

Carlson scored off an Alex Ovechkin assist about a minute later. It wasn't the start we wanted, but I felt like we were still OK.

Not only is Tavares off to a decent start to the 2019-20 National Hockey League season with three goals and four assists in eight games, but not having the $11 million man in the middle of one of their top two lines will create a big ripple effect for the Leafs. "It's always nice to get a win, especially at home". But it's been Carlson at the forefront early this season.

Rob Gronkowski Asked If He’ll Make NFL Comeback
That feeling got worse after an embarrassing blunder on a punt gifted the New England Patriots a touchdown. The Patriots are 6-0 but have a string of injuries on offense that have handcuffed Brady.

Regardless, the Leafs will be obviously hardpressed to replicate the play or production of the player who had 47 goals and 88 points last season.

Jakub Vrana sparked the rally with a goal at the end of the first period for Washington.

"He's playing really well, and that's something that we talked about this summer with the departure of some other guys", coach Todd Reirden said. "I thought they converted on a couple chances, but I had a good feeling about our team tonight. And for a young goaltender to make that adjustment in game - the amount of emotion he had in his game in the first, and he completely settled down - and he let pucks again start to hit him; he was big, he was a presence". Like their parent club, the AHL Hershey Bears fell down 2-0 in the first period to the host Toronto Marlies, but unlike the Caps, the Bears weren't able to author a comeback win, falling 4-3. John Tavares scored late in the third to cut the deficit to 4-3. Just 11 seconds following the restart, Backstrom's one-timer off T.J. Oshie's feed beat Hutchinson to give Washington the lead.
