Loot boxes are also being ripped out, replaced with the new hotness of a Battle Pass system with free and paid tracks. And in case you'd forgotten, it will not be available on Steam, but it won't be on the Epic Games Store either-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a Battle.net exclusive.

Each Battle Pass will have free and premium streams, with players able to see all of the content they are earning or buying. So Battle Pass buyers shouldn't be getting any advantage from what they're unlocking. Pretty much every other major game (Fortnite, Dauntless, Apex Legends, Rocket League, Magic: Arena, the list goes on) is doing the "battle/season pass" setup, as it's a fairly lucrative way to get people to pay out and keep them in the ecosystem as long as possible.

On October 18, Activision released a feature on their blog titled "Explaining Player Progression in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare", providing an in-depth look at a "fresh" progression system for players. "Battle Passes will launch timed to new, post-launch live seasons, so you can unlock cool new Modern Warfare-themed content that matches each season".

The publisher says the first pass will not arrive on October 25 when the game launches (as is customary, for "pre-seasons" to kick off) but sometime "later this year".

Activision has been investing heavily into new engagement models and cross-play is the biggest one.

Activision is changing the way it does Call of Duty DLC with Modern Warfare.

The battle pass will also give players the chance to earn COD point through gameplay, although it won't be live when the game launches next week. The news comes just over a week after the reveal of the Modern Warfare PC requirements, which are surprisingly reasonable apart from the game's staggering 175GB install size.

Supposed leaks in September that not only would Modern Warfare have loot boxes, the boxes would contain gun unlocks.
