Viktor Hovland sets PGA Tour scoring record at CJ Cup

"I'm not looking at anybody behind me".

Brooks Koepka may have just awoken the competitive beast within Rory McIlroy.

The swing concludes at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, which has seen its prize fund beefed up to $10.25 million, and the tournaments are a chance to rack up Fedex Cup points early in the season.

"I'm No1 in the world".

Koepka, whose closest challenger in the world rankings is McIlroy, pointed out that the Northern Irishman hasn't won a major since the American joined the PGA Tour in 2015. McIlroy also pipped Koepka to the PGA Tour Player of the Year award for 2019, despite him thinking he should have won it.

"It's so tough when you have to play seven out of nine weeks, you can't really make any changes in time", he said.

"He (Koepka) talked about trying to be the dominant player in the game. and I thought: "He's going to have to go through me first", declared McIlroy.

Viktor Hovland is making his transition to the PGA Tour look extremely easy.

But Koepka seemed to poke fun at McIlroy, 30, after being asked whether there is a rivalry between the two players.

But China is willing to agree to a partial deal that would include "progress in the direction of canceling all tariffs", he said. It added: "As for reciprocity, the U.S. has a far greater number of diplomatic personnel in China than China has in the U.S. ".

Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka, the first two winners of the tournament, just happened to be the reigning PGA Tour Players of the Year.

"Gary (Woodland) won the US Open and didn't get an automatic pick and Tiger didn't get in having won the Masters so that's a pretty competitive American environment", Spieth said.

Since then, it's been the Koepka show as he racked up four majors in the past three years.

In case it wasn't clear enough, he also added this gem: "Right now I can set that pace, and, you know, everybody is in the rear view mirror".

"A month ago, I was struggling a bit, couldn't get the ball rolling but I found my way back again and had some top-5s, so I hope to see if the trend keeps that way", he said. "But it's just hard to believe there's a rivalry in golf".

Koepka revealed earlier this month that he recently underwent stem-cell treatment to fix a partially torn patella tendon in his left knee.

Although McIlroy's last major title was back in 2014, the Northern Irishman did win the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup title this year.

"My knee's fine. It feels good", Koepka told reporters in South Korea.
