Pupils freed from abusive Nigerian school

A police team raided the school in Daura in Katsina state after some students escaped from their hostel on Sunday and poured into the streets in protest.

He explained that when the Police attention was drawn to the development, he mobilised his men to seal off the facility, and also directed the AC CID to get details and arrest the owners of the facility including Bello.

Owned by one of the most famous and respected Islamic scholars in Daura, Bello Mai Almajirai, the centre is said to house people perceived to be outlaws from their parents and the society.

Another traditional torturing center allegedly meant to be a reformation centre for children with character deformation in Daura has been discovered and closed down by the Commissioner of Police in Katsina state following a riot by the inmates over excessive abuses.

Vanguard recalls that similar incident had happened in Kaduna where about 300 of children were found in chains, having scars of torture on their body at a religious school in a Kaduna town.

President Muhammadu Buhari said earlier in 2019 that his government planned to ban the schools.

The 67 inmates who were freed by Katsina police were shackled in chains, and many were taken to hospital for treatment, police superintendent Isah Gambo told Reuters.

"And in the course of confession, I was made to understand some of the teachers who were indulging in homosexual attitude with the victims escaped but we will definitely trace them".

The almost 70 victims were freed from the facility in Katsina on Saturday as police arrested a 78-year-old man for running what they described as an "illegal detention/remand home", according to Reuters. "If you are studying they will beat you". They were brought here by their parents for the objective of rehabilitating them. I will meet with the Emir of Daura and Governor Aminu Masari on the issue.

The commissioner added that the condition of inmates called for urgent and serious concern, noting that the police would search the 34 local government areas in the state to unravel such centres. Buba promised to arrest the proprietor and his teachers who managed to escape during the raid but will "face the full wrath of the law".
