Brilliant Biles wins vault gold to tie worlds medal record

For a brief moment on Saturday, Simone Biles was tied for most gold medals in the gymnastics world championships.

At 22, she is doing more hard gymnastics than she did in sweeping to five Olympic medals, four of them gold, at the 2016 Rio Games when she was 19. Her U.S. teammate Sunisa Lee took silver, her third medal of the championships, while Angelina Melnikova took bronze for Russian Federation.

Biles, however, later missed the chance of a second medal of the day by finishing fifth in the uneven bars final behind victor Nina Derwael of Belgium, who retained the title she won in Doha past year.

Nina Derwael of Belgium earned the gold by finishing 0.233 points ahead of second-placed Becky Downie of Britain, while 16-year-old American Sunisa Lee finished with bronze.

That took Biles to 23 career world championship medals, equalling the mark set by Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo for any gymnast, male or female. Biles has done it in just five. Biles holds 17 gold medals across four championships against 12 for Scherbo, who competed in five world events between 1991 and 1996. "It definitely didn't go as well as the training previous year, but going into the gym we'll focus a lot more on that vault", she said.

She said on Saturday that if she could only have one medal from the apparatus finals at the Tokyo Olympics, it would be on beam.

In a week where she's written even more history than she usually does, the US gymnastics star won her 23rd world championship medal on Saturday in vault. And via social media and in interviews, Biles has castigated USA Gymnastics for failing to protect young gymnasts and demanded overdue structural and leadership change - all while making her peace, at least outwardly, with her role as the embattled organization's most marketable star.

Typhoon Hagibis: rescue and recovery in full swing after deadly storm
In Kawasaki, southwest of Tokyo , a man in his 60s was found in an inundated apartment and confirmed dead at a hospital. Rescue operations are also under way in many parts of the country which were hit by landslides and widespread flooding.

"I knew going into today there was a very slim chance that I would even medal, but to make a bar final and get to represent the country, I feel really proud because this is not one of my strong suits".

Biles hit a clean beam routine and scored 15.066 points, distancing defending champion Liu Tingting of China by.633 of a point.

Sherbo earned his medals over the course of six years.

Biles scored 15.066 on the beam after a near-flawless routine, opting for a simpler dismount than the double-double she performed earlier in the championships.

Earlier, Filipino teen Carlos Edriel Yulo, 19, won the men's floor title, bettering the bronze he won previous year, by 0.1 points ahead of Israel's Artem Dolgopyat. Maybe they should try gymnastics first.

Said, whose father died in February, earned bronze and knocked Greek Olympic still rings champion Eleftherios Petrounias off the podium and out of an automatic Olympic spot.
