One dead, multiple injuries in New Orleans hotel collapse

He said the top six floors of the building collapsed and that the rest of the construction is still "very unstable".

New Orleans Fire Department spokesperson Tim McConnell said the structure of the upper building remains very unstable. He confirmed three people are still missing, and it is unknown whether they walked off from the site or are trapped.

Health officials said that 18 people have been transported to the hospital and one person refused emergency care.

"It's still a very risky situation", he said.

News outlets report several construction workers had to run to safety Saturday as the Hard Rock Hotel, which has been under construction for the last several months, came crashing down.

An employee said there were roughly 45 workers inside the building at the time. Nearby buildings have been evacuated.

WWL-TV aired and tweeted a viewer's dramatic video of the collapse.

The cause wasn't immediately known.

"It sounded like a - I don't know how to describe it - like a building coming down", said Matt Worges, according to As dust settled following the morning collapse, twisted metal, concrete pilings and other wreckage covered part of Rampart Street. The franchise was planning a 350-room hotel within the city's Theater District.
