The Fast-Moving Saddleridge Fire Ravages the San Fernando Valley Overnight

A fast-moving fire spurred on by high winds broke out in Los Angeles on Thursday night, burning down more than 4,000 acres and multiple homes, and forcing the evacuation of almost 13,000 people in the San Fernando Valley.

The Saddleridge Fire started around 9 p.m. ET and jumped the 210 and 5 freeways, and some parts those roads and the 405 were closed as orange embers lit up the night sky.

The blaze, which officials have named the Saddleridge Fire, ignited late Thursday in the city of Sylmar. These conditions will make it hard for firefighters to contain the fire.

Dynamic fires are rapidly moving toward residential areas in southern California on Friday.

"SoCalGas officials said personnel at their gas storage facility at Aliso Canyon had been evacuated by fire authorities".

Red Flag Warnings have been extended through Saturday evening for large parts of Southern California.

An evacuation center was opened at the Sylmar Recreation Center and was set to open at the Granada Hills Recreation Center around 2:30 a.m. "Still was able to barely get through on the Interstate 5 north".

LAFD reports the fire is at 0% containment, with more than 1,000 firefighters assigned to combat it. Personnel from the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department and U.S. Forest Service are on the scene, helping with the effort. The fire started along the northern portion of the San Fernando Valley, reported USA Today. Both directions of the Foothill Freeway from the Golden State Freeway to the Ronald Reagan Freeway and the northbound Golden State Freeway's truck route in Sylmar were closed due to the fire for an unknown duration, the CHP said.

Southern California Edison cut power to nearly 24,000 customers Thursday to prevent wildfires caused by high winds downing live power equipment.
