Linked Lung Injury Kills 18, Sickens 1080 in US

The rise in cases came both as a result of new cases and local health officials identifying older cases, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention principal deputy director said in a media briefing.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health announced its first human death in the state with lung injuries related to vaping.

In New Jersey, a task force set up by Governor Chris Murphy recommended Thursday that the state move to ban flavored e-cigarettes.

The outbreak of US vaping-related illnesses has surpassed 1,000 cases, including 18 deaths nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

About 70 p.c of sufferers are male, and 80 p.c are below 35 years extinct. But most who got sick said they vaped products containing THC, the ingredient that gives marijuana its high.

Among the other changes that Murphy is calling for include barring the online sale of e-cigarettes and vaping supplies as well as increasing penalties for retailers who knowingly sell to underage buyers. Symptoms include severe, shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest pain. One doctor said the lung burns were like those one sees in a corrosive chemical spill.

Recently, 275 cases have been added to the tally each week, and about half of the newest batch were people hospitalized in the last two weeks.

Most of the tips, together with banning the income of flavored e-cigarettes, will involve laws, he reported. Almost all adults (90%) believe smoking cigarettes is harmful, and 81% believe vaping nicotine products is harmful.

The investigation has increasingly focused on THC vaping products.

They were till no longer too prolonged ago perceived as a less contaminated exchange to smoking because they sort no longer luxuriate in the 7,000 chemical substances in cigarettes, dozens of that are known to motive most cancers. And some countries - including the United Kingdom - have fully embraced vaping as a public health tool to reduce the deadly toll of traditional tobacco. Peak says while traditional cigarettes are considered socially unacceptable by most students, e-cigarettes don't carry the same stigma. "It is pretty much impossible for you to know what is in the e-cigarette or vaping product that you're getting, particularly THC-containing products bought off the street or bought from social sources", said Schuchat.

Schuchat reiterated the agency's intense level of concern about the outbreak.

He said he hasn't noticed any decline in his business since the CDC began investigating vaping, but he did say it's been making customers more aware of the products they are buying and the chemicals in them.
