Cass and Van Buren counties also had a fatal case each, and non-fatal human cases popped up in Barry and Berrien counties.

Health officials there recently confirmed that yet another resident has been infected with EEE, marking the state's eighth human case this year.

MDDHS is encouraging local officials in the affected counties to consider postponing, rescheduling or canceling outdoor activities after dusk, particularly those that involve children.

"Michigan is at present experiencing its worst Eastern equine encephalitis outbreak in additional than a decade", mentioned Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS chief medical executive and chief deputy for health. The University encourages people to take precautions to lessen the chance of being bitten during peak mosquito season, which occurs in August and September. "Wear protective clothing, get rid of standing water around your house, and be sure to use adequate bug spray".

The risk of being bitten by mosquitoes is highest between dusk and dawn, when the "types of mosquitoes most likely to transmit EEE infection are likely to be out searching for food", according to the Mass.gov EEE webpage.

Cam Newton's re-aggravated mid-foot sprain has kept him from practicing, and will likely keep him from playing on Sunday. Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how Newton and the Panthers handle this latest setback.

EEE is one of the most unsafe viruses from a mosquito in the U.S. One in three people who are infected with the virus die.

Symptoms of EEE usually appear four to 10 days after a person is bitten by an infected mosquito.

Of the three cases in Kalamazoo County, one turned fatal. Symptoms of the more serious manifestations of the disease include fever, vomiting, restlessness, and convulsions.

Not understanding the patterns, vectors, and risks is often what puts people in the path of diseases like EEE.

Also being sprayed are Brimfield and Palmer in Hampden County; Ware in Hampshire County; and Brookfield, Charlton, East Brookfield, New Braintree, North Brookfield, Southbridge, Sturbridge, Warren and West Brookfield in Worcester County. About a third of patients die and numerous survivors have mild to severe brain damage, according to health experts. Both emphasized, however, that preventive measures were always the primary way to deal with insects and diseases, and spraying was always a last resort.
