Bolton offers scathing criticism of Trump at closed-door event, attendee says

Trump's statement about O'Brien comes a week after he ousted John Bolton in the national security advisor's article, citing policy disagreements.

Confirming the news through Twitter on Wednesday, Trump composed: "I am delighted to announce that I will name Robert C. O'Brien, now acting as the extremely effective Unique Presidential Envoy for Captive Affairs at the State Department, as our new National Security Consultant (sic)". Trump said that I've worked with Robert for a long time and a lot. "He will do a great job", said Trump in a tweet.

Trump dispatched O'Brien to Sweden to follow the criminal case versus A$ AP Rocky, who was eventually found guilty of attack in August.

At the same time, sources in the administration agreed that the tapping of O'Brien - the highest-placed Mormon named to any position by Trump - strengthens the hand of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as U.S. czar of foreign policy.

Trump announced O'Brien as his pick not long after he said on Twitter that he had ordered the substantial increase of sanctions on Iran.

Senate Republicans praised Mr O'Brien as a solid choice. He has also worked for former secretaries of state Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton, the BBC reports. "That was a disgusting idea, and I put him in any way", Trump said.

But for now, it's being used in bad faith by Trump to give himself and Mitch McConnell cover for their own unwillingness to act. He event went as far as replying "hell, yes" when asked if he wanted to take away AR-15s and AK-47s.

He was given the rank of ambassador one year later.

O'Brien helped secure the 2018 release of American pastor Andrew Brunson, whose two-year imprisonment in Turkey heightened tensions between Washington and Ankara.

A former senior administration official said: "If Bolton were there, he would be saying it was definitely Iran to blame for the Saudi attack and we need to strike right now". "Mamma Mia 3?" And also, as Trump himself noted yesterday, O'Brien once called him "the greatest hostage negotiator in history", Colbert noted. O'Brien is author of the 2016 book, "While America Slept: Restoring American Leadership to a World in Crisis", a collection of essays promoting hawkish US foreign policy.

They relayed that the ex-national security adviser also said the president's decision to invite leaders of the Taliban to Camp David the weekend before the anniversary of 9/11 sent a "terrible signal" and was "disrespectful" to the victims of the terrorist attack because the jihadist group harbored al-Qaeda.

Trump has reportedly remarked that O'Brien "looks the part", and contrasted him to his predecessor in the role, John Bolton, whose bushy mustache and prickly personality did not suit Trump's vision of a White House where everyone looks like they are straight out of "central casting". "The stakes in this unsafe time could not be any higher".
