Spain thrash Argentina to clinch 2nd basketball WC title

In the wake of Spain claiming gold on Sunday, Ricky Rubio and Marc Gasol made the All-World Cup Team along with France's Evan Fournier, Serbia's Bogdan Bogdanovic and Argentina's Luis Scola. He gave up his National Basketball Association offseason to be part of this team, a group that failed to medal at the last World Cup in Spain five years ago, and knows he might not have too many more years left on the global stage.

Spain closed the first half in front by 12 (31-43) and extended their lead to 22 points (33-55).

Gabriel Deck lead Argentina with 24 points.

The Tokyo Games are just over 10 months away and after some downtime following their exertions at the World Cup, teams will begin training their sights on next summer. And the year belongs to Gasol. Former EuroLeague champion Joe Ingles paced Australia with 17 points and Patty Mills netted 15. While the most unfortunate aspect of the tournament was that Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell and his Team USA squad weren't in action on the final day of play, there was still a lot for Jazz fans to enjoy in the last two contests. "But it's so worth it, and not just because we're in the final game".

Australia built a 40-25 lead to open the third quarter.

Australia will have to agonise over another chance for their first World Cup or Olympic medal slipping away.

France took silver in the 1948 and 2000 Olympics and were was also the bronze medallists in the last World Championship (now World Cup) in 2014 and finished fourth in 1954.

France lost 80-66 to Argentina on Friday, with free-to-air commercial broadcaster M6's live coverage of the game drawing an average of 1.1 million viewers for a 15-per-cent audience share. After the first world championships in 2006 in Japan, and versus, Greece shone in the Spaniards back to the top of the podium.

This was the third Fiba World Cup medal for Argentina, making it the fifth nation with that many after the usa (12), Yugoslavia (10), the Soviet Union (eight) and Brazil (six). In the final held at the packed 18,000-seat Beijing's Wukesong Arena on Sunday, Spain relied on aggressive attacking play throughout the course of the game to end with a 20-point victory against its Argentine rival.

"We feel like this will go down as a memory for us as a family, and that is bigger than the World Cup".
