NY Yankees Pitching Legend Mariano Rivera Awarded Medal of Freedom

Rivera was introduced with Metallica's "Enter Sandman", the song that played when he was called in from the bullpen during his career.

Regularly dominating the likes of Willie Mays, Frank Robinson, Hank Aaron and Robert Clemente, Rivera rightfully earned his place as one of the most beloved pitchers in New York Yankees history. He now serves as co-chair of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, and has served on the Opioid Drug Abuse Commission.

Trump praised Rivera as "maybe the greatest pitcher of all time", and took a moment to explain Rivera's entrance music to the gathered crowd. "And more than that, he has lived the American dream and shines as an example of American greatness for all to see".

Rivera is co-chair of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition and has also served on the Opioid Drug Abuse Commission.

Trump recalled Rivera's "dominance" en route to a career that included 13 All-Star selections and five World Series titles.

That moment aside, the Trump administration has seemed willing-and eager, at times-to start a war with Iran. Saudi Arabia has been leading a military campaign to quash the Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 2015.

"Because he put the batter to sleep", Trump said, per The Hill .

Rivera talked earlier this year about his friendship with the president, saying on Fox News, "I respect him". "So, because he's president I will turn my back on him? No ... I believe that he's doing the best for the United States of America".

"Being American", Rivera concluded, "I'm so proud and honored that coming from a small, attractive country called Panama, and live with my family here, and understand the language, and everything that we go through, I'm proud to be an American".

He became once elected by the first-ever unanimous vote into the Nationwide Baseball Corridor of reputation in July 2019.
