Napoli fans are in raptures after seeing their team beat holders Liverpool 2-0 in their Champions League Group E opener on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp's men were far from being the second-best team, but they failed to take their chances and luck was against them.

Barely 10 minutes remained when Jose Callejon went down under an Andy Robertson challenge and German referee Felix Brych pointed to the spot.

Liverpool was second best for most of the game before conceding twice in the final eight minutes, first on a Dries Mertens penalty and then on Fernando Llorente's first goal for his new club.

But Van Dijk believes it is current form that will preserve Liverpool's confidence when they head to Stamford Bridge seeking a sixth consecutive Premier League win of the campaign.

Liverpool must now bounce back in two weeks when they host Austrian champions Salzburg, who made a stunning return to the group stage as teenage forward Erling Braut Haaland netted a hat-trick in a 6-2 demolition of Genk.

But defending the European crown is not easy; only one club in the competition's history has successfully retained its Champions League title, Real Madrid on two occasions.

Even if Liverpool should advance to the knockout rounds without so much drama this season, Klopp is wary of the restocked superpowers certain to be lying in wait in the latter stages.

That is something Klopp's side have to deal with, and they have to keep churning the results out.

After a summer of transfers and near-elimination in qualifying, Ajax looked assured on its return to the Champions League group stage.

"The problem is the other team is fantastic", Guardiola told BBC Sport at the time.

Second-half goals from Dries Mertens and Fernando Llorente secured a home win for the Italian outfit.

"Last season they lost their three away matches but I think this time they will be more solid and careful away from home".

Liverpool continued to press in the second half and in the 65th minute, Mohamed Salah snatched the ball from Kostas Manolas, but, his left footed shot was brilliantly denied by Meret. I really liked the way we played when we weren't in control.

I'm also swayed to go low due to the slight lack of importance of this game in the grand scheme of things.

After cruising through the beginning of the Premier League, it would have done Liverpool wonders to be in a test against someone with Napoli's qualities.
