Amazon launches HD music streaming

The entry of Amazon into the high-rez streaming market impacts manufacturers of music-related hardware; several audio brands, including McIntosh, Sonus Faber, Paradigm, MartinLogan, and Sennheiser, were described in the Amazon press release as offering "compatible. third-party devices".

Amazon Music launched a new streaming tier today called Amazon Music HD, which offers more than 50 million tracks in HD and millions of songs in Ultra HD-the highest quality streaming audio available.

Amazon Music HD is now available to stream in the UK, US, Germany, Austria and Japan.

"We spoke with many artists while developing Amazon Music HD, who were excited about the potential for fans to be able to stream their favorite music, and hear it as it was originally recorded", says Steve Boom, VP of Amazon Music. These tracks have a bit-depth of 24 bits and are sampled at rates between 44.1kHz and 192kHz.

Some of the additional money generated by the new service will go to artists and rights-holders, but Amazon could not discuss the terms of its new licensing deals. An external digital-to-analogue (DAC) converter is recommended for songs sampled at a higher sample rate than 44.1kHz, as this is the highest sample rate quality for built-in DACs.

Spotify and Apple Music have yet to launch premium quality music streaming options. The company says its streaming service will automatically play the highest quality audio supported by the user's device and network conditions.
