Conner, along with Roethlisberger, was hurt during Sunday's 28-26 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. "You've got to have the football mentality that the next guy's up and move on, but obviously with a guy like that it's a little different".

Over the past few days, we've seen numerous starting QB's go down a significant injury as teams scramble to try and save their season because of their unfortunate circumstances.

Later Monday, Roethlisberger said in a statement that the news was "shocking and heartbreaking" and that he feels "like I am letting down so many people".

"I worked for this", Rudolph said.

So it was a stunning scene Monday inside their locker room, just 90 minutes after the Steelers announced Roethlisberger's injury requires surgery that will end his season.

On Sunday, before knowing that Roethlisberger would need surgery, Rudolph said he would be confident in taking over if Roethlisberger were to miss time. The quarterback said he plans to return to play next season. He has won two Super Bowls (XL and XLIII) and is a six-time Pro Bowler.

At this point, we do not know what Mason Rudolph can do for the Pittsburgh Steelers at the quarterback position.

A person familiar with the negotiations says Fitzpatrick has been traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a first-round draft pick in 2020.

Roethlisberger is the only remaining player from the Steelers' most recent Super Bowl championship team, and Switzer was among the teammates who called him their "unquestioned leader". He is now backed up by undrafted rookie Devlin Hodges, and Paxton Lynch, who the Steelers signed to their practice squad on Tuesday. The Steelers clearly have confidence that Rudolph can win them games going forward.

Could Big Ben have played his final snap as a Steeler?
