Tropical storm warning issued for hurricane-hit Bahamas

Tropical storm warning issued for hurricane-hit Bahamas

As of 8 a.m. ET, the storm was about 30 miles east-northeast of Great Abaco Island and about 145 miles east of Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, the National Hurricane Center said Saturday.

It has maximum winds of 45 kilometres an hour, just under tropical storm levels, and is moving north-west at about 9.6kmh.

"Conditions are becoming favorable for a tropical depression or a tropical storm to form within the next day or so as the system moves toward the northwest through the northwestern Bahamas and toward the Florida Peninsula at 5 to 10 miles per hour".

More than 650 Dutch, French and German military personnel have arrived in the Abaco islands in the Bahamas on board two Dutch navy ships, to help with the clean-up operation in the wake of hurricane Dorian.

A tropical storm will form Saturday in the Atlantic, and it is expected to bring thunderstorms and strong winds this weekend in Sebastian, Florida.

Tropical Storm Humberto is threatening Grand Bahama Island, creating new worries for more than 2,000 people living in shelters and those trying to rebuild their homes after Hurricane Dorian.

He said the Bahamas would hold a national day of prayer, and named hurricane response coordinators for the two most-affected islands.

The storm is expected to strengthen in the next 48 hours, the centre said, and may become a tropical depression or a tropical storm.

The Bahamian government discontinued a tropical storm warning earlier in the evening. They were all staying with his daughter-in-law, who was injured and taken to a hospital in the capital, Nassau, after the U.S. Coast Guard found her - but only her.

Prime minister Hubert Minnis said in a televised address on Wednesday that the government was being transparent and would "provide timely information on the loss of life as it is available".

Guterres told reporters Thursday that the Category 5 hurricane, the worst-ever to hit the Bahamas, is "a clear illustration" of the impact of climate change along with cyclones in Mozambique, drought in the Sahel, fires in the Amazon and the Arctic, melting glaciers, and the bleaching of corals.

Those rain totals may be lower, with 1 to 2 inches falling across the northern Bahamas, other forecast models show.

An additional 70,000 people lost almost everything they had when the hurricane swept the northern islands, CNN reported.

A preliminary report estimates Dorian caused at least $7 billion in damage.

"We are back in storm preparation mode again, unfortunately", he said.
