US Hitting Taliban Harder Than Ever

A US- led invasion of Afghanistan shortly after the 2001 attack toppled the Taliban, who had harboured Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader and attacks mastermind. The US now has about 14,000 troops in the country.

As America mourned 9/11, tired Afghans are watching their own toll from the aftermath continue to rise exponentially.

"As each year passes and the details of that tragic day fade, we must ensure the memories of the departed do not", Defense Secretary Mark Esper said.

Rice said "all wars have to end" and she doesn't mind Trump's use of "personal diplomacy" when it comes to foreign affairs, but she said such meetings must be thoroughly planned. "But also, it inspires future generations to serve in defense of our great nation".

In the almost 18 years of fighting since then, the number of USA troops in Afghanistan soared to 100,000 and dropped dramatically after bin Laden was killed in neighboring Pakistan in 2011.

11 anniversary as president, Donald Trump on Wednesday remembered the victims, first responders and USA troops that have battled in Afghanistan, and he unleashed threats against militants contemplating another attack on America.

Meanwhile, Mr. Akbaruddin said the worldwide community needs to continue its commitments made to the Afghan security forces in their fight against the scourge of terrorism.

Many fear his cancellation of negotiations will bring more carnage as the USA and Taliban, as well as Afghan forces, step up their offensives and everyday people die in the crossfire. Subsequently, the Taliban vowed to keep fighting against USA armed forces in Afghanistan.

USA defense officials have declined repeatedly to address what could come next for the military in Afghanistan.

Khalilzad has said the first 5,000 USA troops would withdraw from five bases in Afghanistan within 135 days of a final deal. "When they killed a great American soldier-when they killed 12 people-innocent people- essentially, innocent people because if you look, I mean many of these people were civilians", he said.

Afghanistan has long suffered with unstable security.

Trump spoke after aborting what would have been a historic peace summit and as relatives remembered the victims of the single deadliest attack on United States soil at ceremonies in NY and Washington.

USA officials released data showing that the military launched 810 strikes in August. "The partial ceasefire was to be limited to the foreign forces in Afghanistan", he said. Trump has cited his death as the main reason why the US-Taliban talks were called off.

"They will never have seen anything like what will happen to them", he warned. "They've been hit very hard", he said. While a majority of Afghans oppose the Taliban, the group "has been very effective in tapping into the sector of society who support them". More than 2,400 American service members have been killed in the conflict.

"That's the issue with 'mowing the grass, ' " he said.

Fighting has picked up in several areas of northern Afghanistan, officials said on Wednesday, days after the collapse of talks between the US and the Taliban aimed at agreeing the withdrawal of thousands of USA troops.

"Rick died while leading countless others to safety", Trump said at a ceremony at the Pentagon on Wednesday.

Bush hung a white floral wreath at the memorial and visited with a small group of people waiting to meet with him, including first responders.
