Afghan peace talks with Taliban are 'dead': Donald Trump

On Thursday, a Kabul vehicle bomb, claimed by the Taliban killed 12 people, President Trump said, including a United States soldier.

The developments came after USA and Taliban officials last week agreed on a draft deal that could have led to a withdrawal of troops from the US's longest war.

Peace talks were meant to discuss the withdrawal of USA troops from Afghanistan, a prerequisite for peace in the country. "What's happening is this".

US President Donald Trump (pictured left) can be seen talking to the press on the White House Lawn yesterday.

Taliban fighters now control more territory than at any time since the war in Afghanistan started in 2001, and had been stepping up attacks just as USA and Taliban negotiators appeared to be closing in on an accord to end the fighting. Trump alleged that the Taliban tried to pressurize him by carrying out a terrorist strike that among others killed an American soldier.

"They (the Taliban) thought that (they) had to kill people to put themselves in a little better negotiating position..."

The Taliban responded to Trump's decision by saying in a statement on September 8 that the decision would "harm the United States more than anyone else and will undermine its credibility".

"The Taliban has become convinced that we want to deal far more than they do", she continued, suggesting America's desire to bring its troops home had convinced the militants that they could extract a costly deal from the U.S. "So that's the way it is".

"We had two ways to end the occupation in Afghanistan, one was fighting, the other was talks and negotiations", Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP.

However, whether because of last week's killing of a USA soldier, as he says, or due to wider misgivings, that goal now appears in tatters.

The result of nine rounds of peace talks in Qatar, the agreement would have paved the way for the closure of five American bases within 135 days.

'In terms of advisers, I took my own advice, ' he later told reporters.

In his interview to Fox News, Pompeo said that the United States and Taliban negotiators had been working for months for a peace and reconciliation deal. I'm not looking to discuss it. "Over the last four days, we have been hitting our Enemy harder than at any time in the last ten years!"

"We're certainly not going to let them carry out some self-described race to victory".

Trump said, "As far as I am concerned, they are finished for me". Afghanistan is a very interesting situation.

"Today more than ever Afghanistan needs a political leadership who will receive from citizens a renewed democratic mandate to set the country on a course to peace", the European Union's mission to Afghanistan said. US Marine General Kenneth McKenzie, the head of US Central Command, said on Monday the US military is likely to accelerate the pace of its operations in Afghanistan to counter the upsurge.

"We have been serving as policemen in Afghanistan, and that was not meant to be the job of our Great Soldiers, the finest on earth", Trump tweeted on Monday. "They did a mistake".
