ACT Alliance Alert: The Bahamas: Hurricane Dorian (September 09, 2019) - Bahamas

"The Bahamians impacted by Hurricane Dorian are facing a humanitarian crisis, and the American government, global partners and private organizations continue to support them with aid and services". The death toll from Dorian rose to 50 on Tuesday, mostly on Great Abaco Island. So when Labor Day weekend came it was no question she'd make the trip to Freeport, Grand Bahama with her son, all while hoping to avoid Hurricane Dorian as it moved toward the Florida coast.

Abaco Islands are the most severely affected with thousands of houses leveled, telecommunications towers down, and water wells and roads damaged, very limited or no water, electricity and sanitation, and most of the Marsh harbor infrastructure is damaged. The island of Abaco was largely devastated and about 70,000 people have been left homeless across the archipelago.

Moskowitz noted that even the best hurricane building codes were not developed for Dorian, which hit parts of the Bahamas with 185 miles per hour sustained winds.

The firefighters and search dogs are still working to locate two other Canadians last known to be in Treasure Cay, according to the Canadian consulate in Nassau.

"They've said they've got kind of a handle on how things are going, and basically I've been urged to pursue the course we're doing", DeSantis said. "I did not assume that so quickly", he explained.

The Emergency Management Agency of The Bahamas says there are 2,500 people missing after Hurricane Dorian's strike on the island over a week ago.

Smith said more than 5,000 people had evacuated to New Providence, the island which contains the capital Nassau, but that they had seen a "significant reduction" in the number of people asking to be evacuated. "They all were cousins, but we were just like sisters and brothers", Bain said.

"With the storm surge flooding, it wiped out a lot of people's lives and homes", Cartwright said, adding that he knows people with loved ones who died.

Cartwright said people are without basic necessities of food, shelter and clean water.

"We're not out of the woods with hurricane season, obviously we're still monitoring", DeSantis said during a news conference at FPL's Command Center in West Palm Beach.

Carl Smith, a spokesman for the country's Nationwide Emergency Management Agency, said he expected the list to shrink as the names are checked.
