Team USA loses 89-79 in quarterfinals against France

Before the game, United States of America big man Myles Turner thought it was a good idea to question Gobert's status as the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

The Americans lost 89-79 to France in the quarterfinals, ending their World Cup run in China prematurely.

Evan Fournier scored 22 points and Rudy Gobert added 21 points and 16 rebounds for France, which entered the game 0-9 all-time against Team USA. Mitchell has plenty of experience as a lead guard in big moments, carrying Utah in the postseason both as a rookie in 2018 and in his second National Basketball Association season past year.

Donovan Mitchell led Team USA with 29 points. It ended a streak of 58 straight worldwide competition wins for the U.S. squad in which National Basketball Association players participated. With the loss, the USA will fail to get a medal for only the second time in the last 10 editions of the tournament.

France will meet Argentina on Friday for a berth in Sunday's final while 2006 champions Spain take on Australia, who overpowered Czech Republic 82-70 in the day's other quarter-final.

Canada's champ: Andreescu a US Open winner with a big future
The 18-year gap between Williams and the No. 15 seed is the largest between women's finalists in any major in the Open era. Williams meanwhile was in a reflective mood afterwards and felt she didn't properly show up when she needed to.

Team USA inexplicably stopped feeding Mitchell in the fourth quarter, instead handing the closing reigns to All-Star point guard Kemba Walker, who was in the midst of his worst game of the tournament.

Both teams gave up leads in the second half.

A lot of the NBA's top-tier talent passed on participating in the World Cup this summer, but at least some of those stars (James Harden, Steph Curry, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, Dame Lillard, Kevin Love, Tobias Harris, Trae Young, and Andre Drummond) will need to be on the roster next summer to give the USA its best chance of securing a fourth straight Olympic gold medal. Jazz center Rudy Gobert patrolled the lane for France, and France's wings secured the perimeter.

The composition of Team USA's roster at those Olympics remains to be seen.

France: Gobert played the first 12:26.

"We beat the USA, and that's huge, but we haven't won anything yet", France's Nicolas Batum said.
