Air Force reviews hotel choices after Trump resort stay

Scottish Greens co-leader, Patrick Harvie said an investigation by a US Congressional committee into President Donald Trump's potential conflict of interest over military spending at Prestwick and his Turnberry golf resort, could see Scotland's "good worldwide name dragged into a corruption allegation".

"He told me that he stayed there many years ago, before I bought it", Mr Trump said. Pence stayed at the Doonbeg resort last week, almost 200 miles away from the official meetings in Dublin that were the objective of his visit to the country.

According to the New York Times, "the Defense Department signed an agreement with the Prestwick airport to serve as a refueling location for military flights in August 2016, during the final months of the Obama administration". Articles appear on for a limited time.

The US House Oversight Committee has actually been probing why the crew on the military transport plane made the stop at the Trump resort since April, Politico reported, adding that it is part of a broader investigation into US military expenditures relating to Trump's Scottish property.

"I don't need to have somebody take a room overnight at a hotel", Trump told reporters Monday on the White House South Lawn.

"The Committee does not believe that US taxpayer funds should be used to personally enrich President Trump, his family, and his companies", Oversight chairman, Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, wrote last Friday.

Trump added: "Mike's family has lived in Doonbeg for many years, and he thought that during his very busy European visit, he would stop and see his family!"

Trump's own stays at his own properties, most notably Mar-a-Lago in Florida, as well as government and diplomatic use of his hotel in Washington, have raised concerns that he is profiting from his presidency. The vice president flew back and forth on Air Force Two for his meetings in Dublin.

Mr Trump tweeted on Monday afternoon that he knew "nothing" about the crew from a C-17 shared by the USAF and the Alaska Air National Guard staying at the hotel when the aircraft stopped at Prestwick en route to Kuwait.

Democrats are also concerned about United States military stopovers at Glasgow's Prestwick airport, which is near the Trump-owned golf course at Turnberry and which has benefited from purchases of fuel by the USA defense department.

Beginning in 2015, the U.S. Air Force contracted with Prestwick Airport in Glasgow, Scotland, to be one of the dozen military and civilian airfields in Europe where aircraft could refuel.

"The unprecedented corruption, coverup, and crimes by the president are under investigation by the committee as we determine whether to recommend articles of impeachment or other Article 1 remedies", he said, referring to the US Constitution's section on legislative powers.

The US President Donald Trump has once again insisted that he was not involved in the decision of his Vice President Mike Pence to stay at the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Doonbeg, Co Clare.

Kevin McCarthy, the top Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, on Tuesday dismissed controversy surrounding U.S. officials staying at Trump properties. "... The failure of Prestwick Airport, the closest commercial airport to the Turnberry resort, would place further financial pressure on Trump Turnberry, which already operates at a loss".
