Rivera on McCaffrey's usage: 'Tough to take him out'

McVay insisted the running back rotation plan was predetermined, that the Rams do not have a two-running back system and that Brown got the bulk of red-zone carries due to how the game panned out.

It's early yet, but it's possible this will be the new normal for Gurley and the Rams: decent spells, lots of Brown, few carries near the goal line and an ice wrap immediately after the game.

Gurley had 14 carries for 97yards, 41 coming on a fourth-quarter drive. And after Gurley gained just 8 yards on five carries in the first half, there was even more head scratching. We all know Gurley's knee could cause a problem, which would explain the limited run he got in this first game. If Gurley and the Rams continue to pick his spots, Gurley's stats could suffer, but the Rams should be in pretty good shape.

It was a rough day for Panthers quarterback Newton, playing in his first regular-season game since December 17, when a lingering shoulder injury forced him to the sideline. He also had an interception with 5:55 left in the game and was held to a career-low minus-2 yards rushing.

Linebacker Cory Littleton forced and recovered a fumble and also intercepted a pass, and Samson Ebukam also recovered a fumble for the Rams.

Speaking Tuesday, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said the team is not concerned about Cam Newton's (foot) status for Week 1.

The Carolina Panthers talked all offseason about curtailing Christian McCaffrey's snaps this season. If the Panthers are going to compete in a loaded NFC South, the offense needs to drastically improve overnight, and I'm just not sure that's capable of taking place.

Newton had a costly helmet malfunction on a third-and-7 play in the first quarter after the Panthers had returned to the field following a timeout.

"When you lose somebody like him, it can be deflating", McVay said.

The Panthers have a quick turnaround to make, as they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday night at Bank of America Stadium.
