Joker wins best film at Venice Film Festival

"There is no movie without Joaquin Phoenix".

The actor not only had to work on capturing the mental state of Arthur Fleck.

The film, which premiered at the festival, is now the highest honoured movie of the 76 edition of the oldest film festival in the world. The first trailer shows Arthur Fleck a struggling and depressed stand-up comedian and amateur clown living in Gotham City.

Reeves had previously revealed that the new Batman movie will feature a younger Batman and it will not be based on "any particular [comic book]", Comicbook.com reports.

Already, there's Oscar buzz surrounding the performance of Phoenix as the titular supervillain in Joker.

Jack Napier was the name of the man who eventually broke bad and became the Joker in Tim Burton's 1989 adaptation of Batman - which was considered the defining iteration of Batman films prior to the release of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.

Could we be looking at a Batman-less version of the Joker getting his own series of movies? On the other hand, Christian Bale and Kristen Stewart have been all praise for Robert Pattinson after he was named the new Batman. Positioned as a sort of original "incel", Phillips' Joker could end up being a cautionary tale for our modern times - and Phoenix is contributing to that as well.

The Joker director is keeping busy with press during the festival rollout and during a red carpet interview, the folks over at Variety asked if he saw the worlds of Joker and The Batman merging together any time soon, and the filmmaker's exit line - "definitely not" - was loud and clear.

Although that kind of crossover doesn't seem to fit Phillips' vision for the character, he did say recently he would be up for a sequel to Joker if Phoenix would reprise his role.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August, where it earned the Golden Lion jury award and sweeping acclaim for Phoenix's portrayal of villainous titular character.

Joker played to a packed house in Toronto and, as it unsettlingly and violently delivered the villain origin story it promised, reminded audiences why it was such a controversial play out of Venice.
