Indiana Colleges and Universities Ranked Among Best

College leaders across the country took a deep breath as they opened their email Monday, looking for something to brag about in the new 2020 America's Best Colleges by U.S. News & World Report.

Hopkins shares the No. 10 spot with Duke in the National Universities category in USNWR's annual rankings of almost 400 national colleges and universities for 2020. The private college also ranked No. 10 in the "Best Universities Midwest" category.

Johnson & Wales University was "unranked" by U.S. News and World Report - who notified JWU this year of their decision.

The school rankings, according to U.S. News, are based on a formula that uses statistics to measure graduation rates, social mobility, faculty information, admissions data and academic reputation.

The institution as a whole was recognized as a top performer for social mobility (No. 62), campus ethnic diversity (No. 94) and top public school (No. 105).

University of California Merced also climbed to a tie with 12 other colleges at No. 104 from No. 136 in overall ranking for national universities. This year's jump is the greatest single-year increase in the school's history.

Meanwhile, Olin College of Engineering in Needham ranked third on a list for the best undergraduate engineering programs, and Babson College in Wellesley ranked first in the entrepreneurship category.

In the "Best Colleges for Veterans" list, Baldwin Wallace, with an undergraduate enrollment of 3,136, ranked No. 7.

During the 2019 legislative session, state lawmakers passed a number of bills that would bring changes to the higher education system, including a measure that directs the Florida Board of Governors, which oversees state universities, to propose a new method for distributing money tied to each school's performance. The school's undergraduate business program improved six spots, moving to No. 38. "It clearly demonstrates that the University of Florida is on an unstoppable trajectory", said Mori Hosseini, chairman of the UF Board of Trustees.

Not all colleges and universities are ranked. "Combined with college visits, interviews and your own intuition", U.S. News & World Report says, the analysis can be a tool in your "quest for the best fit college".

U.S. News added social mobility rankings for the first time this year to gauge how colleges help economically disadvantaged students, which it said are less likely than others to finish college. The magazine has various categories, but the two big ones are national universities and liberal arts colleges. Last year, UChicago was tied for third place with Columbia University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Yale University.
