Hurricane Dorian Regains Category 2 Strength Ahead of Forecast Landfall in Canada

Hurricane Dorian Regains Category 2 Strength Ahead of Forecast Landfall in Canada

Hurricane Dorian is gone, but there is a lot of activity in the tropics, including Tropical Storm Gabrielle and two systems the National Hurricane Center is watching.

The storm made one final USA stop in southeastern MA on Saturday, unloading rain and tropical storm force winds.

Dorian slammed into Canada's Atlantic coast on Saturday, knocking down trees, cutting power, and blowing over a large construction crane in downtown Halifax, the capital of the province of Nova Scotia.

The Bahamas, which got the full brunt of Dorian while it was a category 5 hurricane, is still reeling from the devastation left behind by Dorian. About 100,000 others in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island also had no electricity.

Steve Harris has lived on Ocracoke Island for most of the last 19 years.

The U.S. Coast Guard began landing local law enforcement officers on the island Friday via helicopter and airlifting out the sick, elderly and others in distress.

Even after the storm passed, residents were dealing with downed power lines, construction debris, and fallen trees.

"We were out trying to batten that down and keep it together, but we were unsuccessful", she said.

Wednesday the upper low will move closer to South Louisiana upping our rain chances to about 30% for isolated showers and storms.

"Residents can expect to see members of the military in numerous locations across the region as they assist municipal works staff", the regional government said in a statement.

Hurricane Dorian reached the extreme east of Canada with strong winds on Sunday and left hundreds of thousands of people without power supply. The loss of its hurricane status refers to the fact that it no longer has a warm core, CNN meteorologist Gene Norman explained, but Dorian is still a low-pressure system. Several hundred homes and businesses lost power. According to the United States, over 70,000 people were in need of food and shelter following the storm, and more than 40 have been confirmed dead as of now.

The US National Hurricane Centre said the post-tropical cyclone was centred about 50km east-southeast of Cape Whittle, Quebec, late on Sunday morning.

However, Nova Scotia Power is receiving criticism online for its slow response to the situation. It was blamed for causing eight deaths, six of them in Nova Scotia.
