Air Force reviews travel after stay at Trump property in Scotland

Mr Pence's last week indicated that Mr Pence stayed at the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Doonbeg at the president's suggestion. "The inquiry is part of a broader, previously unreported probe into us military expenditures at and around the Trump property in Scotland". "Every time you find a person landing in an airplane within 500 miles of something I own - Mike Pence, as an example - his family lives in, he actually told me he stayed there many years ago".

The probe was launched after criticism of the Air Force for using Glasgow Prestwick Airport for refueling stops and layovers, and the stay of seven crew members at Trump's nearby Turnberry golf course and resort in March. Even when USAF aircrews follow all directives and guidance, we must still be considerate of perceptions of not being good stewards of taxpayer funds that might be created through the appearance of aircrew staying at such locations.

The crew was flying the C-17 from Alaska to Kuwait and stopped for refueling at Glasgow Prestwick Airport, a struggling commercial airport that is key to Turnberry's business model.

According to a letterthe panel sent to the Pentagon in June, the military has spent $11 million on fuel at the Prestwick Airport - the closest airport to Trump Turnberry - since October 2017, fuel that would be cheaper if purchased at a US military base.

The aircraft, carrying supplies to the Middle East, stopped in Scotland both en route and on its return leg, and the five-person crew stayed at Turnberry both nights. The Democrat-led committee says Mr. Trump renovated the resort for hundreds of millions of dollars a couple years before the election, and now the airport and golf course have close ties.

Cummings is also concerned about Scotland's Prestwick Airport, looking into purchase orders for fuel totaling $11 million and reports that the airport offered cut-rate rooms for select passengers and crew, as well as free rounds of golf at Turnberry to visiting USA military and civilian air crews.

In a statement issued by Pence's office after Short's comments, the office said, "Because of some misreporting, we want to clarify that the decision to stay at Trump National in Doonbeg, Ireland was exclusively a decision by the Office of the Vice President and was based on the requirement to find accommodations near the Vice President's ancestral hometown that could satisfy official meetings on both coasts of the Emerald Isle".

The U.S. Air Force did not respond directly to questions about the stay by the Maine Guard members, and instead provided a general written statement from Brig. While he emphasized that the decisions had "NOTHING TO DO WITH ME", he did praise the "good taste" of those who choose to visit his luxury hotels. "The 259 stops this year included 220 overnight stays", The Times adds. While those statistics do not disclose which hotel was used during those overnight stops, but the number of overnight stays has steadily increased since Trump clinched the presidency.

The Air Force was unable to immediately say how many of those overnight stays were made at Turnberry.
