Vegans have a higher risk of stroke, lower risk of heart disease

"While this method can say the risk of stroke isn't as low as one might expect it to be in vegetarians considering how much healthier they are in general compared to meat-eaters, their overall risk of a major life-changing cardiovascular event happening still appears much lower".

Vegan and vegetarian diets could increase the risk of a stroke, according to new research.

A large new study on vegetarian, vegan, and pescatarian diets highlights a number of potential health benefits and risks associated with each diet, including everything from lowered risk of heart disease to a fairly notable increase in stroke risk.

In addition to low cholesterol levels, vegetarians and vegans also had lower levels of vitamin B12, vitamin D, and amino acids than meat eaters, which may be related to their higher stroke risk.

This was equivalent to 10 fewer cases of ischaemic heart disease in vegetarians and vegans than in meat eaters per 1,000 people over 10 years.

"Shifting towards a plant-based diet can have personal and planetary health benefits, though it does not necessarily mean becoming a vegetarian", he said.

This may be owing to lower blood cholesterol and levels of nutrients such as Vitamin B12.

To reach that finding, Tong and her colleagues collected dietary, health and demographic data from about 48,000 United Kingdom adults without a history of heart problems, about 24,400 of whom ate meat and 7,500 of whom ate fish but not meat.

The researchers also didn't ask why people were following certain diets, so it's possible-even though the researchers tried to adjust for influencing factors-that some people with health issues or family histories of medical problems were following vegetarian diets for those reasons.
